About the album

Nate Ruess spent the making of Some Nights listening to an awful lot of hip hop, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in particular. So he went looking for a hip hop producer, found Jeff Bhasker's name all over his favourite liner notes, and talked him into working with a rock band for the first time.

The mix of Ruess's theatrical tenor, Jack Antonoff's guitars and Andrew Dost's arrangements with Bhasker's huge beats made something new. "Some Nights" is a stomping, harmony-stacked singalong, "We Are Young" brings in Janelle Monáe, "Carry On" is a fist-in-the-air anthem, and "It Gets Better" and "All Alright" round things out.

The title track reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and both singles topped the Alternative Songs chart. Rolling Stone heard a dash of Queen and a dollop of Les Miz in it, which is a combination we'd quite like to see on a menu.
