Frightened Rabbit's 2013 album Pedestrian Verse in a gatefold jacket, with "The Woodpile," "State Hospital" and "Late March, Death March."
This reissue comes in a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve, pressed in Germany. Pedestrian Verse reached No. 9 in the UK and No. 2 in Scotland, and singer Scott Hutchison called it the best record the band made.
Frightened Rabbit spent years as one man's confessional, with Scott Hutchison writing the songs and the band dressing them up. For their fourth album and first for Atlantic, he finally handed out the pens, and the whole group wrote together, road-testing new material on tour so it arrived in the studio already worn in.
They made it with producer Leo Abrahams, mostly at Monnow Valley Studio in Monmouthshire, with a few tracks cut in Govan and the Highlands. "The Woodpile" is the big one, a rousing, drum-heavy anthem, "State Hospital" is tender and cinematic, "Backyard Skulls" stomps, and "Late March, Death March" has one of their biggest choruses. "Acts Of Man" opens the album on a slow build, and "The Oil Slick" sees it out. Hutchison set out to write about wider subjects than his own heart this time, and the songs look outward at towns, neighbours and the people in them.
The A.V. Club gave it an A, NME gave it 8 out of 10, and it scored 79 on Metacritic. Few bands have ever made a song called "Holy" sound quite this much like a Saturday night in Glasgow.
