About the album

Frightened Rabbit wrote Pedestrian Verse the long way round, on the road. Rather than walking into the studio with brand-new songs, the Selkirk band played them in on tour until they felt properly worn in, and for the first time Scott Hutchison shared the songwriting with the rest of the group. He set out to write about the wider world, then a break-up arrived halfway through and pulled the record back toward the personal. Hutchison later called it the best album the band had made.

Leo Abrahams produced it with the band and Craig Silvey mixed it, giving the big, rolling choruses of "Acts of Man" and "Backyard Skulls" plenty of room to swell. "The Woodpile" broke on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show, "Dead Now" was the first track out, and "State Hospital" handed the album its title. The extra sides gather songs from the same era, among them "If You Were Me," "Snow Still Melting," "Default Blues" and "Radio Silence."

It was the album that marked the band's move to Atlantic, and the one studio LP with guitarist Gordon Skene. Hutchison also had a hand in the artwork and photography, which is rather more creative input than most of us manage on a birthday card.
