About the album

Mark Foster wrote "Pumped Up Kicks" while working as a jingle writer at Mophonics in Venice, California. The song went viral in 2010, landed the band a South by Southwest booking and a deal with Columbia imprint Startime International, and the plan from there was simple: stop everything, skip the marketing and touring, and make an album that could stand next to it.

From July to September 2010 they did exactly that, recording across Los Angeles and London. Paul Epworth co-wrote "Call It What You Want" and "Life on the Nickel," "Helena Beat" and "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" bounce along on bright synths, and "Houdini" later turned up on the SSX soundtrack. The deluxe disc adds "Broken Jaw," "Love," "Ruby," "Chin Music for the Unsuspecting Hero" and "Downtown," then remixes by The Knocks, RAC and Treasure Fingers and Gus Dapperton's own take on "Pumped Up Kicks."

Torches went to No. 1 in Australia and gave the band five singles, all of them on the first disc here. Ten years on, that whistled hook still follows people out of the shop and halfway down Queen Street.
