Foster the People's 2011 debut Torches: "Pumped Up Kicks," "Houdini," "Helena Beat," "Call It What You Want" and "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)."
Torches is wall-to-wall sunny indie-pop hooks, and "Pumped Up Kicks" was one of the biggest songs of 2011. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
Mark Foster was writing commercial jingles in Los Angeles when he put "Pumped Up Kicks" up for free on his blog. It spread like wildfire, and before long Foster the People had a record deal and one of the most inescapable songs of the year. Torches proved they were no one-hit wonder.
Working with producers Paul Epworth and Greg Kurstin, the band built a bright, bouncy record of synth-pop, indie rock and dance beats: "Helena Beat" and "Houdini" are fizzy and fun, "Call It What You Want" and "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)" are pure sunshine, and "Pumped Up Kicks" still sounds deceptively breezy. A defining record of 2010s indie pop.
