Foo Fighters' 2002 album One by One as a 2LP set on 180g vinyl, with "All My Life" and "Times Like These."
This 2LP set spreads the album over four sides of 180g vinyl, mastered at Gateway and cut at Bernie Grundman. One by One won the Grammy for Best Rock Album, topped the charts in the U.K., Australia and Ireland, and sold more than a million copies in the U.S.
Most bands would settle for a finished album. Foo Fighters had one, recorded at great expense in Los Angeles, and decided it didn't sound like them. So in the spring of 2002, after a Coachella set that reminded them why they liked playing together, Dave Grohl took two weeks before a tour drumming with Queens of the Stone Age and remade the whole record from scratch in his home studio in Alexandria, Virginia.
Grohl promoted engineer Nick Raskulinecz to co-producer, reworked the songs with Taylor Hawkins in Topanga, then cut drums, guitars and vocals in twelve days, with Nate Mendel and new guitarist Chris Shiflett, on his first Foos album, following on. The result is their heaviest, most urgent record. "All My Life" whispers before it explodes, "Times Like These" became one of their defining songs, "Low" grinds, and "Halo" and "Disenchanted Lullaby" show the tender side under the noise. It was also the first Foo Fighters album with Hawkins handling every drum part.
Grohl wanted the record to carry the energy of the band's live shows, and on "All My Life" you can practically feel the floor move. A basement in Virginia beating a big Los Angeles studio is a lesson our accountant now brings up at every meeting.
