About the album

Most love songs are written from a safe distance. Josh Tillman, the former Fleet Foxes drummer, wrote a whole album from inside his own new marriage, calling it a concept album about himself, warts, wit and all. He worried about playing the songs to the people closest to him, which tells you how honest it gets.

Jonathan Wilson produced, Phil Ek mixed, and the sound is lush, cinematic soft rock with strings, mariachi horns and a crooner's swagger. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" remembers the couple exploring Los Angeles when they first met, "True Affection" goes electronic, and "Holy Sh*t" was written on the day Tillman and his wife Emma were married. "Bored In The USA" adds a laugh track to a piano ballad, and "I Went To The Store One Day" follows the pair from their first meeting to the very end.

Tillman launched it with a straight-faced Letterman appearance and a mock streaming service of his own. He once planned a music video featuring a dozen kittens in a wedding chapel; the kittens, we're relieved to report, were spared.
