About the album

Love songs are usually written by people who are fairly sure they're the hero of the story. Josh Tillman, the former Fleet Foxes drummer who records as Father John Misty, called I Love You, Honeybear a concept album about himself, and wrote it as an honest, funny and often unflattering account of falling for his wife Emma and trying to deserve her.

Produced with Jonathan Wilson, mixed by Phil Ek and mastered by Greg Calbi, it's a lush, string-swept record with mariachi horns, '70s soft-rock piano and a sharp tongue. "Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)" remembers the couple exploring Los Angeles, "True Affection" goes electronic, "Bored in the USA" is the sarcastic ballad (complete with laugh track) he debuted on David Letterman, and "Holy Sh*t" was written on their wedding day. "I Went to the Store One Day" closes the story at the very beginning, in a shop.

Pitchfork, The A.V. Club and Billboard all put it in their 2015 year-end lists, and it's the record that made Father John Misty a headliner. It ends with a couple meeting in a store, which we find extremely encouraging and have no plans to stop mentioning.
