About the album

Plenty of bands write their best songs in a cramped van. Glenn Frey and Don Henley wrote a good chunk of this one while sharing a house in Beverly Hills, which may explain why it sounds so assured. It was the album that turned Eagles from a country rock band into international superstars.

Bill Szymczyk produced and engineered, giving the band a tougher, glossier sound. The title track rides a slinky, R&B-tinged groove and became their second No. 1 single, "Lyin' Eyes" tells a long, cinematic story over easy country picking, and Randy Meisner's soaring "Take It To The Limit" gives the bassist his big moment. Bernie Leadon's banjo instrumental "Journey Of The Sorcerer" (later famous as the theme to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) adds a dash of the cosmic, Don Felder takes a rare lead vocal on "Visions," and "Too Many Hands" and "After The Thrill Is Gone" round out a beautifully balanced record.

It earned an Album of the Year nomination and launched a world tour. The Hitchhiker's connection also means it's the one Eagles record we can sell to science fiction fans, provided they bring a towel.
