Disturbed's 2000 debut album The Sickness, with "Down With The Sickness," "Stupify" and "Voices."
This Reprise reissue presents the original twelve-track album on vinyl. The Sickness spent 106 weeks on the Billboard 200 and went five times platinum in the US, the band's biggest seller.
Disturbed did not exactly arrive overnight. Before The Sickness, David Draiman and the band spent years as their own promotion machine around Chicago, handing out cassettes and stickers at other bands' shows in a city that, by Draiman's account, was more Smashing Pumpkins than metal.
They found their producer close to home: Johnny K had gone to high school with guitarist Dan Donegan's brother, and pushed the band hard to get a big, tight, rhythmic sound. "Stupify" was the lead single and tackled racism head on, "Down With The Sickness" became the band's signature, and "Voices" and "The Game" kept the singles coming into 2001. Their crunching take on Tears for Fears' "Shout," here as "Shout2000," shows a sense of fun under all the heft.
Revolver named it one of 20 essential nu-metal albums, and Loudwire later ranked it tenth on its list of the top 50. It remains the record that gets people of a certain age making that noise in the car, and we have quietly given up asking them to stop.
