Dinosaur Jr.'s loud, lovely 1988 album Bug, home of the indie anthem "Freak Scene," plus "No Bones" and "Budge."
Bug is a cornerstone of American indie rock, and "Freak Scene" is J Mascis's most famous song, a sweet melody buried in a glorious wall of fuzz.
NME's reviewer gave Bug 8.999999 out of ten, which tells you something about how it lands. The original trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph made a record that's both deafening and tender, with Mascis's lazy drawl floating over guitar solos that sound like a jet taking off.
"Freak Scene" is the masterpiece, catchy and heartfelt and fuzzed to the hilt, "No Bones" drifts in a haze, "They Always Come" and "Budge" crunch, and "Pond Song" shows off Mascis's knack for winding, folky melodies.
It was the last album with Barlow until the band reunited in 2007, and it remains a template for decades of noisy, melodic indie rock. Turn it up.
