Dido's 1999 debut No Angel as a 25th anniversary edition on 140g vinyl, with "Thank You," "Here with Me" and "Hunter."
This 25th anniversary edition puts No Angel on 140g vinyl. The album topped the UK chart, won British Album of the Year at the 2002 Brits and has sold 15 million copies worldwide.
No Angel is the textbook sleeper hit. It arrived in America in 1999 to a fairly quiet reception, didn't reach Dido's native UK until October 2000 for contractual reasons, and then simply refused to stop climbing.
Dido had been singing with her brother Rollo's band Faithless, which brought her to the attention of Arista boss Clive Davis, and the two siblings produced most of the album together. Rick Nowels, Youth and Sister Bliss chip in, and the sound mixes folk-pop with trip hop beats, electronica and dreamy atmospherics. She wrote "Here with Me," "Thank You" and "I'm No Angel" in a single day. "Hunter" and "Don't Think of Me" have a sharper edge, and "My Lover's Gone" is as hushed as a lullaby. Then Eminem sampled "Thank You" for Stan, and suddenly everyone on Earth knew the chorus.
It went ten times platinum in the UK and quadruple platinum in the US, and it soundtracked roughly every coffee shop of the early 2000s. We've been playing it in the shop since, and nobody has ever once asked us to turn it off.
