Deftones' ninth album Ohms from 2020, produced by Terry Date, with "Genesis" and the title track.
This edition was pressed in Canada and includes a lyric insert. Ohms reunited Deftones with producer Terry Date, and both "Ohms" and "Genesis" picked up Grammy nominations.
Some bands mellow with age; Deftones just get more beautifully loud. Ohms came together slowly, with Chino Moreno talking about new songs that were still mutating back in 2018, and the band finishing the mix in 2020 while getting everyone in the same room had become a genuine logistical puzzle.
Terry Date, who shaped their early sound, was back behind the desk, and the sessions ran at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Trainwreck Studios in Seattle. The result mixes alternative metal, shoegaze and post-hardcore into what Classic Rock called dream pop with a metallic edge. "Genesis" opens with a shimmering synth before Stephen Carpenter's riff crashes in, "Ceremony" is gorgeous and heavy at once, "Urantia" and "Error" lurch and swoon, and the title track closes with one of their most anthemic choruses. Abe Cunningham's drumming and Frank Delgado's keyboards and samples give even the quietest passages a real sense of weight.
Critics greeted it with acclaim. As album titles go, it's a reminder that resistance, for this lot, has always been the point.
