Deftones' triumphant 2010 sixth album Diamond Eyes: the title track, "Rocket Skates," "Sextape," "Beauty School" and "You've Seen the Butcher."
Diamond Eyes is the sound of Deftones refusing to quit. Made after bassist Chi Cheng's devastating car accident, it's one of the most powerful, beautiful records of their career, and it debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.
In 2008 Deftones were nearly finished with an album called Eros when bassist Chi Cheng was badly injured in a car accident. The band shelved those songs, brought in Sergio Vega on bass, and with producer Nick Raskulinecz wrote and recorded a brand new album, fast and live, determined to make something hopeful.
The result is one of their best: crushing riffs and Chino Moreno's dreamiest melodies side by side. The title track and "Rocket Skates" are huge, "Sextape" and "Beauty School" float on Stephen Carpenter's shimmering guitars and Frank Delgado's textures, and "You've Seen the Butcher" has one of the heaviest grooves they've ever written. A comeback and a high point at the same time.
