About the album

By 1991, Chuck Schuldiner was ready to push death metal somewhere new. For Human he brought in a fresh line-up: Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert of Cynic on guitar and drums, and Steve Di Giorgio on bass. In May they set up at Morrisound Recording in Tampa with producer Scott Burns.

What came out is far more intricate than anything Death had done before, eight songs in about 34 minutes. "Flattening of Emotions" opens at full gallop, "Lack of Comprehension" (which Schuldiner said was inspired by the Judas Priest subliminal message trial) got its video on MTV, and "Secret Face" and "See Through Dreams" twist through odd meters and jazzy runs. "Cosmic Sea" is a gorgeous instrumental that lets Di Giorgio's bass sing, and the liner notes pay tribute to Atheist bassist Roger Patterson. Schuldiner shared production credit with Burns.

Guitar World later put it among the 100 greatest guitar albums, and Loudwire called it the best death metal album of 1991. "Cosmic Sea" even turned up in a 90s video game, Damage Incorporated, which is more than most instrumentals about the ocean can say.
