Cher's 1998 dance-pop comeback Believe in its 2018 remaster, with "Believe," "Strong Enough" and "All or Nothing."
This vinyl edition uses the 2018 remaster. Believe sold over 11 million copies worldwide, went four times platinum in the US and topped the album chart in Canada, while the title track spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The biggest hit of Cher's career began as a demo nobody at the label wanted. Warner UK boss Rob Dickins heard "Believe" ninth on a tape of songs from Brian Higgins, loved the chorus, and kept handing it to writers until Steve Torch and Paul Barry helped finish it. Cher was not keen on dance music at first, but a club remix of an earlier single had shown there was an appetite.
She cut the album in London in 1998 with producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling, with Todd Terry on "Taxi Taxi." The Auto-Tune on her voice became known as the Cher effect. "Strong Enough" is a Eurodisco stomper, "Dov'è l'amore" adds Spanish guitar, Diane Warren wrote "Takin' Back My Heart," and she covers Amy Grant's "The Power" and gives "We All Sleep Alone" a dance remake. The album was dedicated to Sonny Bono.
The Do You Believe? tour that followed was one of the highest-grossing tours by a female artist at the time. The album was also nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. Thanks to this record, every karaoke night since 1998 has had at least one brave volunteer attempting the vocal effect without the software.
