About the album

Karen and Richard Carpenter signed to A&M in 1969, and within a year a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song nobody had made a hit of, "(They Long to Be) Close to You," sat at the top of the charts. Karen sang lead and played drums, Richard arranged, played keyboards and stacked the harmonies, and for the first half of the 1970s the pair barely left the radio.

Collected runs from their slowed-down "Ticket to Ride" through "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Superstar" and "Goodbye to Love," with its famous fuzz guitar solo, to "Top of the World," "Sing" and "Yesterday Once More." Their covers of "Please Mr. Postman" and "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" sit beside later gems like "I Need to Be in Love" and "Touch Me When We're Dancing," and Karen's voice, low and close and unhurried, ties the lot together. Richard's arrangements do the rest, all soft brass, choirs of overdubbed harmonies and that unmistakable polish.

Side D also brings "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft," written by Toronto's own Klaatu. It remains the most ambitious long-distance call ever placed from this city, and frankly the reception was excellent.
