Cake's 2001 fourth album Comfort Eagle, remastered on 180g vinyl, with "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," "Love You Madly" and the title track.
This Columbia / Legacy edition is remastered on 180g vinyl. Comfort Eagle debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and went gold in the US.
Cake's first album for Columbia kept the formula and gave it a shine. John McCrea's deadpan talk-singing, Vince DiFiore's trumpet and those clipped, funky rhythm guitars are all present and correct, recorded at Paradise Studios in Sacramento with extra work in San Francisco, and produced and arranged by the band themselves.
"Short Skirt/Long Jacket" is the hit, a list song with a groove you could set your watch by, and an instrumental version later opened every episode of Chuck. "Opera Singer" and "Meanwhile, Rick James..." show off McCrea's dry storytelling, "Love You Madly" is a sweet, bouncy love song, and "Long Line of Cars" and "Arco Arena" keep things moving. Tyler Pope adds keyboards and guitar to three tracks, and "Commissioning a Symphony in C" and "Pretty Pink Ribbon" show off the band's sly, literate side. Don C. Tyler mastered it at Precision Mastering in Los Angeles, and it sounds tight and punchy on 180g.
The band let fans vote on the second single through their website, and "Comfort Eagle" won the poll. Democracy in action, with a horn section.
