![black midi: Cavalcade [ROUGH TRADE]](https://cdn.shoplightspeed.com/shops/621399/files/35422375/1652x1652x2/new-vinyl-black-midi-cavalcade-rough-trade.jpg)
black midi's 2021 album Cavalcade, wild and theatrical London art rock, with "John L," "Slow" and "Marlene Dietrich," plus a bonus flexi disc.
Cavalcade is black midi at their most ambitious, jazz, prog and noise rock colliding with real tenderness, from one of London's most thrilling young bands.
If you like your rock music unpredictable, black midi are the band for you. The London trio of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson followed their acclaimed debut Schlagenheim with Cavalcade in 2021, and somehow made things even wilder.
"John L" lurches and lunges like a cult leader's march, "Slow" swings between jazzy calm and full-blown frenzy, "Chondromalacia Patella" twists and turns, and "Marlene Dietrich" and "Diamond Stuff" are surprisingly lovely, almost cabaret-like ballads. Morgan Simpson's drumming is jaw-dropping throughout.
Saxophones, strings and keys join the fray, and the result is theatrical, bewildering and brilliant. The bonus flexi disc holds their cover of "21st Century Schizoid Man."
