Bernard Herrmann's score for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 Psycho on red 180g vinyl, in mono, from the racing prelude to the shower scene and the finale.
This mono pressing comes on red 180g vinyl. Herrmann scored Psycho for strings alone, and the shrieking violins of the shower scene are among the most famous sounds in film.
Bernard Herrmann came to film the long way round. As chief conductor of the CBS Symphony Orchestra he became the composer for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre on the Air, which led to his first film score, Citizen Kane, and an Academy Award the same year for The Devil and Daniel Webster. He went on to work with Alfred Hitchcock on nine films, including Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Birds and this one.
Psycho follows the film cue by cue. The prelude sets a nervous, driving pulse that carries straight into "The City" and Marion's flight in "The Rainstorm," before side two opens with "The Bathroom," "The Murder" and the long, cold aftermath at the swamp. Herrmann builds the whole thing from string writing, tight and restless, letting harmony and rhythm do the work that a full orchestra might have done with volume.
Alex Ross wrote that Herrmann revolutionized movie scoring, and Psycho is the clearest case for it; you hear its fingerprints in horror films to this day. His final score, for Taxi Driver, came sixteen years later. We'd recommend playing this one after you've had your shower, not before.
