Why you'll love it

This 12" EP plays at 45 RPM on 180g vinyl, with a fold-out poster and a credits and art insert. It's the St. Catharines band at their slowest and heaviest, with Johnny Truant's Oli Mitchell guesting on the six-minute title track.

About the album

Some bands wind down; Alexisonfire tuned down. Most of Dogs Blood was written by September 2009, in the wake of Old Crows / Young Cardinals, but touring kept it waiting until August 2010, when the band finally got it to tape with co-producer Jon Drew, who also mixed and mastered it.

Each of the four songs felt too far out for a full-length album, which is exactly why they sit so well together. The title track grew from a single riff into six minutes of sludge, "Grey" and "Black As Jet" keep the weight on, and one of the four began life as an instrumental from the Old Crows sessions. George Pettit wrote his lyrics loosely in the manner of Nick Cave, and the artist Skinner painted the cover knowing nothing but the title and the band's name.

Toronto heard the title track first, live at the CASBY Awards on September 30, 2010, a few weeks before the EP came out on Dine Alone. As a late-career swerve goes, it rattles the cutlery rather nicely.
