About the album

Alex G's address book got a proper workout on this one. God Save the Animals came together at Headroom Studios and Spice House in Philadelphia, at SugarHouse in New York City, at Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, at Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, at Watersong Music up in Bowdoinham, Maine, and at his own place in Philadelphia. He co-produced it with Jacob Portrait, bassist in Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

The singles map the record nicely. "Blessing" came first, eerie and hymn-like; "Runner" is a warm, loping rocker that he played on The Tonight Show; "Cross the Sea" bends his voice into strange new shapes; and "Miracles," which he took to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is as tender as anything he's written. "After All" opens on a note of uneasy faith, "Immunity" and "Headroom Piano" drift, and "Forgive" closes things quietly. NME heard a newfound clarity and vulnerability, and Beats Per Minute praised songs that are impeccably crafted and irresistibly delivered.

Chorus.fm counted it among the best work of his career, and it charted on the Billboard 200 and in New Zealand and Scotland. A Philadelphia record with a passport, and it travels better than most of us.
