About the album

Most science fiction films of the early 70s sounded like oscillators having an argument. René Laloux's animated La planète sauvage, drawn by Roland Topor and animated in Prague, went the other way: Alain Goraguer gave its giant blue Draags and tiny human Oms a score of wah-wah guitar, flute, harpsichord and slinky bass, part jazz-funk, part lounge, part dream.

Goraguer, a pianist and arranger who had worked with the cream of French pop, recorded it over three days at Studio Davout in Paris in March 1973. The themes keep returning in new clothes: "Déshominisation (I)" sets the eerie, wordless mood, "Ten Et Tiwa" floats on a gentle melody, "Strip-tease" grooves low and slow, and "La Longue Marche" builds with real menace. Side D gathers the newly found alternate takes and mixes, so the album now plays like the full session.

The score has become a cult favourite with collectors and hip hop producers alike, and Goraguer, who died in 2023, gets the album's dedication. Giant blue aliens keeping humans as pets sounds bleak on paper, yet the soundtrack is the grooviest thing on either planet.
