About the album

Most singers would take a breather after an album as big as Let's Stay Together. Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell went straight back to work at Hi Records in Memphis and, before 1972 was out, delivered another record that made heartache sound like the best thing that ever happened to anyone.

"Love and Happiness" is the slow-burning centrepiece, ranked No. 98 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs, while "I'm Still in Love with You" and "Look What You Done for Me" both went top five on the US pop chart. Green wrote most of the album himself, then made two covers entirely his own, Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" and Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times." Mitchell keeps the band tight and the horns warm, so that famous falsetto has all the room it needs.

The drum break that opens "I'm Glad You're Mine" has been sampled more than 200 times, a posthumous Notorious B.I.G. single with Eminem among them. Half of hip hop owes Al Green a thank-you card, and he has the good grace never to mention it.
