Yves Tumor's 2018 Warp debut Safe in the Hands of Love as a 2LP set, with "Noid," "Licking an Orchid" and "Lifetime."
This 2LP set comes in a gatefold sleeve with a 12-inch insert and a download code. The album drew universal acclaim from critics, and "Noid" and "Lifetime" are two of the most thrilling songs in Yves Tumor's catalogue.
Most artists signing to Warp would announce the album with a little fanfare. Yves Tumor, who grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and taught themself drums, bass, guitar and keyboards, preferred to let it simply appear one September morning, after three singles had already set tongues wagging.
The record pulls ambient noise, soul, shoegaze and pop into the same orbit. "Noid" is a churning, string-swept rush built on a sample, "Licking an Orchid" pairs Tumor with James K for a slow, glowing duet, and "Lifetime" lands like a rock anthem beamed in from another planet. "Economy of Freedom" and "Honesty" drift and smoulder, while "Hope in Suffering" pushes right out to the edge. Tumor wrote and produced it all, with Justin Raisen co-producing, Luke Niccoli adding production and Mahssa Taghinia as executive producer. "All the Love We Have Now" and "Let the Lioness in You Flow Freely" bring it home in a widescreen swirl.
It was the moment the wider world caught up with an artist who had spent years in the experimental underground of Leipzig, Berlin and Los Angeles. Few records sound this tender and this unruly at the same time, and we'd suggest playing it loud enough that the neighbours start asking questions of their own.
