Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 2006 second album Show Your Bones, the New York trio's bigger, bolder follow-up to Fever to Tell, with "Gold Lion" and "Cheated Hearts."
This Interscope reissue comes with a printed inner sleeve. Show Your Bones debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album, and NME named it the second-best album of 2006.
Early in 2005, Yeah Yeah Yeahs threw out the songs they'd been working on and started again from scratch. Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase have called it one of their darkest stretches, but the reset paid off: Show Your Bones, out in March 2006, trades some of Fever to Tell's raw art-punk for acoustic textures, bigger hooks and a richer, more grown-up sound.
The band produced it with Squeak E. Clean, with Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio adding production, Money Mark guesting, and Alan Moulder among the mixers. It was recorded at Stay Gold Studios in Brooklyn after writing sessions in Los Angeles. "Gold Lion" opens with a stomping acoustic strum and a chant, "Cheated Hearts" builds into one of Karen O's most yearning choruses, and "Way Out" and "Phenomena" give Zinner's guitar room to prowl. "Turn Into" closes the record on a hopeful rush.
Rolling Stone, Spin and NME all ranked it high among the year's best, and it went on to earn a gold certification in the UK. A 2005 report claimed it would be a concept album about Karen O's cat. It wasn't, though we'd have stocked that one too.
