Wire's 1978 art-punk landmark Chairs Missing, remastered on their own Pink Flag label, with "Outdoor Miner" and "I Am the Fly."
Chairs Missing took Wire from minimalist punk into something stranger and more beautiful, and "Outdoor Miner" is one of the great post-punk singles.
The title is British slang for someone with a few chairs missing from the front room, which suits a band that never sat still. Wire's debut Pink Flag had already crammed 21 songs into 35 minutes; for the follow-up they stretched out, bringing in keyboards and synths with producer Mike Thorne.
The songs got bigger and odder. "Outdoor Miner" is a perfect, wistful pop single, "I Am the Fly" buzzes and sneers, "Practice Makes Perfect" broods, and touches of psychedelia and art rock creep in around the edges without ever losing that clipped punk edge.
Critics loved it then and the record's reputation has grown ever since; it reached No. 48 in the UK, and you can hear its fingerprints on decades of post-punk and indie.
