Wire's 1977 debut Pink Flag, 21 sharp, minimalist punk songs in 35 minutes: "Mannequin," "Ex Lion Tamer," "Three Girl Rhumba" and "12XU." 2018 remaster.
Pink Flag is a landmark of post-punk, a hugely influential album covered and borrowed from by R.E.M., Minor Threat, Elastica and countless others.
While most punk bands of 1977 played it fast and loud, Wire stripped everything back. Produced by Mike Thorne, Pink Flag crams 21 songs into about 35 minutes, many of them over in less than a minute, each one built on a single sharp idea and then gone.
"Mannequin" is a sly, catchy pop song, "Three Girl Rhumba" and "Ex Lion Tamer" have riffs to die for, "Reuters" opens the album with tension, and "12XU" is a 90-second blast. An art-punk essential.
