Whitesnake's 1987 blockbuster Whitesnake (known as 1987 in the UK): "Here I Go Again," "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night."
Whitesnake's self-titled album sold more than eight million copies in the US alone. "Here I Go Again" went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night" close behind on radio and MTV.
David Coverdale had already sung for Deep Purple and spent a decade building Whitesnake into a big deal in Britain, Europe and Japan. America was the one place still unconvinced, so he signed with Geffen, teamed up with guitarist John Sykes and set about making a record big enough to fill every arena from Los Angeles to Boston.
It worked. The blues rock of the early years gave way to a sleek, polished hard rock sound with towering choruses and Sykes's searing riffs. "Still of the Night" is a thunderous, slow-burning epic, "Here I Go Again" and "Crying in the Rain" give two older Whitesnake songs a glossy new coat of paint, and "Is This Love" is the power ballad that soundtracked a great many slow dances. "Bad Boys," "Give Me All Your Love" and "Children of the Night" keep the energy up.
The album earned Whitesnake a Brit Award nomination for Best British Group in 1988, and its videos made the band fixtures on MTV. Coverdale retired in 2025, but nobody seems to have told the chorus of "Here I Go Again," which is still going strong.
