Tool live at the Starplex Amphitheatre in Dallas on August 1, 1993, from an FM broadcast on the Lollapalooza tour: "Sober," "Intolerance" and "Opiate."
This gatefold LP captures Tool's Dallas Lollapalooza set from an FM radio broadcast, closing with a 1993 Maynard James Keenan interview. It's the Undertow-era band with founding bassist Paul D'Amour, playing the songs that made their name.
Before the 15-minute epics and the art-gallery videos, Tool were a hungry young band out on the summer festival circuit with one EP and a brand-new debut album to their name. This broadcast catches them in Dallas on August 1, 1993, on the Lollapalooza tour, at the moment the world was starting to pay attention.
Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Danny Carey and Paul D'Amour work through Undertow highlights, with "Intolerance," the title track "Undertow" and "Sober" up front and "Bottom" grinding away on side two. "Opiate," the title track of their 1992 EP, shows where the heavier, stranger music started. Carey's drumming is already a force of nature, and D'Amour, who left in 1995, anchors the low end.
From here came Ænima, Lateralus, four Grammy Awards and more than 13 million albums sold in the US. In 1993 they were still one of the bands on the bill, which we imagine nobody mentions to them anymore.
