This Will Destroy You: Young Mountain [DARK OPERATIVE]

Why you'll love it

Young Mountain is the record that put This Will Destroy You on the map, a self-recorded demo that grew into a debut. Its songs have since scored trailers, films and documentaries, from The Taking of Pelham 123 to The Purge.

About the album

Young Mountain started life as a homemade demo, recorded by the band themselves and sold after local shows in Texas. It began picking up press mentions all on its own, and Magic Bullet Records came calling, putting it out properly on CD in 2006 and then on vinyl the following spring.

There are six long, patient pieces here, built from slow-blooming guitars, swelling feedback and drums that arrive like weather. "Quiet" opens with a melody that rises until it fills the room, "The World Is Our ______" and "I Believe in Your Victory" swing between hush and roar, and "Grandfather Clock" ticks over gently before the storm. Jeremy Strom adds violin to the closing two tracks, and "There Are Some Remedies Worse Than the Disease" ends things in a long, glowing wash.

Film and TV editors found the record quickly: "Quiet" turned up in a trailer for The Purge and closed an ESPN documentary, and "I Believe in Your Victory" landed in Prom Night. Dark Operative keeps it in print today. Play it loud once, and you'll start hearing a movie trailer every time someone opens the fridge.
