About the album

Most songwriters bury their early material in a drawer and hope nobody finds it. Nate Amos went the other way. He grew up on a rural mountainside in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in a family of bluegrass players, and started using the Lorelei name around 2013 after moving to Chicago. Under the This Is Lorelei name he has put out a small mountain of mixtapes and EPs since around 2013, and for Holo Boy he went back through that archive, picked the songs that had stuck, and recorded them again properly.

The result plays like a greatest hits from a parallel universe. "Money Right Now" shares its name with one of his 2021 tapes, "I Can't Fall" opens it, and the title track closes it out. Amos wrote all of it, and his knack for a sideways hook, honed in Water from Your Eyes and on 2024's Box for Buddy, Box for Star, runs right through it.

It arrived on Double Double Whammy in December 2025, a few months before Amos signed to Matador. His discography lists sixteen mixtapes and eleven EPs, which makes a ten-song album look positively restrained.
