About the album

Long before Odessey and Oracle became a cult classic, five young men from St Albans made a debut that sounded nothing like the beat groups around them. Begin Here came out on Decca in April 1965, built around Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals and Rod Argent's jazzy keyboards. The American version, simply titled The Zombies, came out three months earlier with a slightly different running order.

"She's Not There" is the hit everyone knows, all minor chords and electric piano, and "The Way I Feel Inside" is a near a cappella gem that later turned up in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic and in the animated film Sing. "Can't Nobody Love You" opened an episode of HBO's Girls, Argent takes the lead on "I Got My Mojo Working," and the R&B covers ("Road Runner," "Summertime," a Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke medley) show how hard they could swing live. Paul Atkinson, Chris White and Hugh Grundy round out the band.

Santana's cover of "She's Not There" later turned up in The Long Kiss Goodnight, proof the song travels well. As album titles go, Begin Here was also refreshingly accurate.
