The White Stripes' 2000 album De Stijl on 180g vinyl, recorded in their Detroit living room, with "Hello Operator" and "Death Letter."
De Stijl is the White Stripes' raw blues heart, cut on an 8-track in Jack and Meg's living room and named after the Dutch art movement that shaped their look.
Red, white and black, primary colours and straight lines: the White Stripes' whole look came from the Dutch art movement De Stijl, so naming their second album after it made perfect sense. Jack White produced it himself on an 8-track analogue machine in the living room of their Detroit house.
It's the sound of a band boiling the blues down to its bones. "Hello Operator" stomps and squalls, "You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)" is a two-minute garage-pop gem, "Apple Blossom" and "Truth Doesn't Make a Noise" show Jack's sweet side, and their covers of Son House's "Death Letter" and Blind Willie McTell's "Your Southern Can Is Mine" pay proper respect to the masters.
It came out on Sympathy for the Record Industry in 2000 and paved the way for White Blood Cells and Elephant. Primitive, joyful and loud, it's where the legend really took shape.
