The Verve's 1993 debut A Storm in Heaven, remastered on 180g vinyl, with "Slide Away," "Blue" and "Star Sail."
This reissue is remastered on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket. Produced by John Leckie, the psychedelic debut reached No. 27 on the UK Albums Chart and went gold there in 2014.
A Storm in Heaven was mostly written in the studio, which says a lot about how much four young musicians trusted each other. School friends Richard Ashcroft, Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury had brought in guitarist Nick McCabe, signed with Virgin's Hut imprint in 1991 and put out three singles before heading to Sawmills Studios in Cornwall with John Leckie. Savage and Best had taken over management just before the sessions.
Leckie produced and mixed, and he gave McCabe's guitar room to swirl and echo around Ashcroft's voice. "Star Sail" opens wide, "Blue" was the first single in May 1993, "Slide Away" followed that September, and "Already There," "The Sun, The Sea" and "Butterfly" drift deeper into psychedelia, while "See You In The Next One (Have A Good Time)" waves you out. Most of the songs grew out of jams in the room, and you can hear the four of them listening to one another.
They promoted it at Glastonbury, across Europe with The Smashing Pumpkins and on a headlining US tour, then closed out 1993 on a UK tour with Oasis, which must have made for some lively catering.
