The Verve's 1995 second album A Northern Soul as a 30th anniversary 2LP set on brick red vinyl, an indie exclusive, with "History" and "This Is Music."
This 30th anniversary indie exclusive spreads the remastered album over two brick red LPs. All three singles made the UK Top 40, with "History" the highest at No. 24, and NME later named it one of the 500 best albums of all time.
Two years before "Bitter Sweet Symphony" made them household names, the Verve made the record that bridges their psychedelic beginnings and the anthems to come. After writing in a rehearsal space in Wigan, they decamped to Loco Studios in Wales with Owen Morris, fresh from producing their friends Oasis, and finished 15 tracks in the first three weeks. The band produced alongside Morris, and the playing has the loose, searching feel of four people pushing each other hard.
Richard Ashcroft wrote much of it at the end of a six-year relationship, and he described the album as one person working through every emotion going. Nick McCabe's guitar fills every corner, from the surging "A New Decade" and "This Is Music" to the gentle sway of "On Your Own." "History" is the big, string-swept heart of the record, with orchestral parts that give Ashcroft's voice all the room it needs, and "Drive You Home" and "Life's an Ocean" stretch out into the band's widest, most cinematic territory.
It peaked at No. 13 in the UK, went gold in 1998, and Melody Maker, NME and Select all put it on their best-of-1995 lists. The sessions were famously eventful; the vinyl, we're pleased to say, behaves perfectly.
