About the album

Every legend has a first chapter, and Motown's biggest girl group wrote theirs here. Meet The Supremes came out late in 1962, before the run of chart-toppers, and it catches three young Detroit singers learning how good they could be, with the label's young writers and players right behind them. The singles "I Want A Guy," "Buttered Popcorn," "Your Heart Belongs To Me" and "Let Me Go The Right Way" all live here.

Ross takes the lead on the sweet "Your Heart Belongs To Me" and the bluesy, intense "Who's Lovin' You," while Wilson steps forward on the soulful "Baby Don't Go." Ballard belts "Buttered Popcorn," which The Guardian's Stevie Chick picked as one of the ten best Supremes songs. AllMusic's Andrew Hamilton reckoned Ross's lead with Wilson and Ballard's harmonies 'could melt icebergs,' and "Time Changes Things" points ahead to the Holland-Dozier-Holland hits to come, with "Play A Sad Song" a proper torch ballad.

Paste likened "Buttered Popcorn" to the snack itself. We tested that theory on a slow Tuesday, and the record held up rather better than the popcorn.
