About the album

Most bands promote a new album with interviews, TV spots and a tour. For Comedown Machine, the Strokes did none of it: no interviews, no photo shoots, no live shows, just a sleeve dressed up as an old RCA tape reel box and the music left to speak for itself.

It speaks in a lot of accents. "One Way Trigger" sends Julian Casablancas up into falsetto over a bright, synthy gallop, "All the Time" is classic Strokes guitar interplay, "Welcome to Japan" struts with funk-rock confidence, and "80's Comedown Machine" slows everything down to a hazy crawl. "Tap Out" opens the record with a groove, and "Call It Fate, Call It Karma" closes it like a crackly old jazz-age ballad. "All the Time" also came out as a 7-inch single. Gus Oberg produced, and critics heard echoes of OMD, New Order and Echo & the Bunnymen.

BBC Music praised its unexpectedly wide range of styles, and Clash called it their most thought-provoking record yet. Not one interview to promote it, which, frankly, is the kind of sales strategy we can respect.
