Sharp, wiry 2003 second album from the Strokes, Room on Fire: "Reptilia," "12:51," "The End Has No End" and "Under Control."
Room on Fire took everything great about Is This It and made it tighter and catchier. "Reptilia" has one of the best guitar solos of the 2000s, and "12:51" is pure New York cool.
After Is This It turned them into the most talked-about band in the world, the Strokes went back into the studio with producer Gordon Raphael and made a record that's just as lean, just as cool, and arguably even more fun. Eleven songs, about 33 minutes, no wasted notes.
"Reptilia" is a tense, wiry classic, "12:51" makes Nick Valensi's guitar sound like a synthesizer, "Under Control" is a sweet, swaying slow dance, and "The End Has No End" and "Meet Me in the Bathroom" bounce along on Julian Casablancas' lazy-cool vocals and Albert Hammond Jr.'s interlocking riffs. A perfect companion to the debut.
