The Pogues' 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God, with "Fairytale of New York," "Thousands Are Sailing" and "Fiesta."
Home to "Fairytale of New York," If I Should Fall from Grace with God is the Pogues' best-selling album and a No. 3 hit in the UK.
There's a reason "Fairytale of New York" turns up every December and never wears out its welcome: Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl's bittersweet duet is one of the great Christmas songs, and it lives here, on the Pogues' best-selling album.
The rest of the record is just as good. The title track bursts out of the gate, Phil Chevron's "Thousands Are Sailing" is a sweeping emigrant's song, "Fiesta" is a brass-blasting Spanish knees-up, and "Turkish Song of the Damned" brings in eastern flavours as the band push beyond their Irish punk-folk roots. New members Terry Woods, Philip Chevron and Darryl Hunt broaden the sound.
It also went top ten in several other countries. Raucous, romantic and full of heart, it's the Pogues at their peak.
