About the album

Before Smash made them famous, the Offspring were a hard-touring Orange County punk band with a 7-inch called Baghdad that talked Epitaph boss Brett Gurewitz into giving them a shot. Producer Thom Wilson took them into Westbeach Recorders in June 1992, and about a month later they had Ignition.

It's quick, melodic and wiry, with Dexter Holland's high yelp out front and Noodles riffing hard behind him. "Session" and "We Are One" kick things off, "Kick Him When He's Down" later went to radio as a single, "Take It Like a Man" and "Get It Right" were updated from earlier recordings, and "Dirty Magic" was good enough that the band re-recorded it twenty years later for Days Go By. Dexter Holland, Noodles, Greg K. and Ron Welty cut it in roughly a month, and one leftover, "Mission from God," surfaced years later. Thom Wilson mixed it with Ken Paulakovich.

The band spent a year and a half on the road behind it and played it front to back for its 20th anniversary. Ignition, as the name implies, is where things caught fire.
