About the album

The Marías began with a sound check. Singer María Zardoya, born in Puerto Rico and raised outside Atlanta, was on the bill at the Kibitz Room in Los Angeles, and drummer and producer Josh Conway was running the board for the first time. They started writing almost at once, brought in keyboardist Edward James and guitarist Jesse Perlman, and made two Superclean EPs before this full-length debut.

Cinema leans into the band's love of film and of Pedro Almodóvar in particular, moving between English and Spanish with jazz percussion, soft guitar and the odd horn solo. "Hush" glides on a cool bass line, "Un Millón" and "Spin Me Around" sway, and "Little By Little" and "Heavy" sink deeper into the haze. Zardoya's whispery vocals do a great deal with very little.

They promoted it on the road with Halsey, and in 2026 they earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The record features a song called "Hable Con Ella" and closes on "Talk To Her," the same Almodóvar film in English, in case anyone at the back missed it.
