The Black Keys' raw 2002 debut The Big Come Up, recorded in a basement in Akron: "I'll Be Your Man," "Busted" and their take on "She Said, She Said."
The Big Come Up is where it all started for Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, a gritty, fuzzed-out blues rock debut made with two microphones bought off eBay.
Long before the arenas, the Grammys and "Lonely Boy," there were two college dropouts in Akron, Ohio, recording in Patrick Carney's basement on a 16-track machine with a couple of second-hand mics. That's The Big Come Up, and it sounds wonderfully dirty.
Dan Auerbach's distorted guitar and soulful howl ride Carney's pounding drums through originals and old blues covers. "I'll Be Your Man" later became the theme for HBO's Hung, "Busted" and "Leavin' Trunk" stomp, and their version of the Beatles' "She Said, She Said" is wonderfully grimy.
It's the sound of a band that would conquer the world, at its rawest and most unvarnished. Turn it up and let the speakers rattle.
