Teenage Fanclub's 1991 third album Bandwagonesque on 180g vinyl, Glasgow guitar pop with "Star Sign," "The Concept" and "What You Do to Me."
This reissue was remastered at Abbey Road and pressed on 180g vinyl, with a download card. Spin named it album of the year for 1991, ahead of Nevermind, and "Star Sign" reached No. 4 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.
Teenage Fanclub met Don Fleming at CBGB in March 1991 and were recording with him in Liverpool a few weeks later. Fleming's big idea was harmonies, since not many of their contemporaries were singing that way, and the band took it to heart.
Norman Blake, Gerard Love and Raymond McGinley trade songs and voices over fuzzy, ringing guitars, with Brendan O'Hare on drums. "The Concept" opens with a slow burn, "What You Do to Me" is pure sugar, and "Star Sign" became their biggest American hit. "December," "Alcoholiday" and "Sidewinder" lean so warmly on Big Star that some critics called the album "Big Star's 4th."
"The Concept" turned up in Young Adult and "What You Do to Me" in The World's End, and Ben Gibbard covered the whole record in 2017. Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums placed it at No. 386, and NME later ranked it No. 115 of the 500 greatest. Gene Simmons, who owns the moneybag logo, sent a letter about the cover and got a cheque, which makes this the rare album to earn a royalty for someone who wasn't on it.
