Supergrass's 1995 debut I Should Coco, remastered, with "Alright," "Caught By The Fuzz" and "Strange Ones."
This remastered pressing was made in Germany. I Should Coco went to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, sold over a million copies worldwide, and "Alright" reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart.
Bassist Mick Quinn once said the whole album cost less to make than the video for "Alright," and you can hear the thrift as pure energy. Gaz Coombes, Danny Goffey and Quinn were spotted around Oxford by producer Sam Williams, cut "Caught By The Fuzz" for a tiny local label, and were on Parlophone before the ink was dry. The title is Cockney rhyming slang for I should think so.
They recorded in Cornwall at speed, wanting to catch the songs' energy before the money ran out. "Caught By The Fuzz" is a punk narrative, "Mansize Rooster" bounces, "Lose It" and "Lenny" crash along at full tilt, "Alright" became a piano-led teen anthem, and "Strange Ones," written about Cowley Road, ends with bells recorded at Carfax Tower. "Sofa (Of My Lethargy)" was cut live in one take with everyone in the room, and "Time To Go" signs off with country-tinged acoustic guitar.
Buzzcocks, The Jam, Madness and The Kinks all echo through it, but the cheer is all their own. We've checked the shelves; the sideburns are sold separately.
