About the album

Annie Clark promoted Masseduction with a string of deadpan, satirical video clips and a mock press conference on Facebook Live, which tells you plenty about the record. It's glossy and funny on the surface and quietly devastating underneath, built from voice memos, text messages and melodies she picked up while travelling.

Clark produced it with Jack Antonoff at Electric Lady Studios, and the guest list is a treat. Kamasi Washington plays sax, Jenny Lewis sings, Sounwave adds beats, Greg Leisz brings pedal steel, and her aunt and uncle, the duo Tuck & Patti, contribute guitar and vocals. "New York" is a tender piano ballad, "Los Ageless" is a sleek pop strut, "Pills" is a sing-song earworm, and "Slow Disco" and "Smoking Section" close things beautifully.

It was the fourth most mentioned album on critics' year-end lists for 2017, and she toured it both solo in theatres and with a band at festivals. Singing to prerecorded tracks in theatres one month and fronting a band at festivals the next is, we gather, one way to get two tours out of one wardrobe.
