Spoon's 2002 album Kill the Moonlight as a limited 20th anniversary edition on opaque white vinyl, with "The Way We Get By" and "Small Stakes."
This 20th anniversary edition on opaque white vinyl is a limited Matador pressing. Lead single "The Way We Get By" went on to turn up in a string of TV shows and remains one of their best-loved songs.
Spoon have always known that what you leave out matters as much as what you put in. On their fourth album the Austin band stripped things to the bone: tambourine where the drums might go, a piano line, a handclap, a burst of reverb, and a great deal of space in between. Pitchfork called it "an adventure in starkness." Merge put it out in August 2002.
Britt Daniel recorded parts of it at the Catacomb, with Jim Eno and Mike McCarthy capturing the rest at the Garage between January and March 2002; the three produced and mixed it together. "Small Stakes" opens on a racing tambourine that Daniel played himself, "The Way We Get By" rolls along on piano and handclaps, and "Something to Look Forward To" (co-written with Miles Zuniga) and "Stay Don't Go" show off the hooks. "Jonathan Fisk" and "All the Pretty Girls Go to the City" are lean and mean.
Stereogum heard Wire, Motown, the Kinks and even Timbaland in it. It remains the record many fans hand over first, usually with the words "just trust me."
