About the album

Greatest hits records had more or less gone out of fashion by 2019, which is precisely why Britt Daniel wanted to make one. He grew up getting to know The Cure through Standing on a Beach and New Order through Substance, and he set out to give Spoon the same kind of introduction. He picked the songs himself, and admitted that "My Mathematical Mind" and some early favourites lost out to the running time.

What made it is a tight, wiry tour of a band that rarely wastes a note. "I Turn My Camera On" and "I Summon You" come from Gimme Fiction, "Don't You Evah," "The Underdog" and "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, "Do You," "Inside Out" and "Rent I Pay" from They Want My Soul, and "Hot Thoughts" from the album of the same name. "The Way We Get By" still sounds like a car stereo in summer, and Jim Eno's drumming holds it all in place.

A year later Spoon followed up with All the Weird Kids Up Front, a companion picked by the fans. Letting the audience choose the second volume is either very democratic or a clever way to avoid an argument in the van.
