Solange's 2008 album Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams, a Motown-inspired soul record with "I Decided" and "Sandcastle Disco."
This reissue puts Solange's second album back on vinyl. It reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200, and "Sandcastle Disco" and "T.O.N.Y." both went to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart.
Solange grew up on her mother's records, Dusty Springfield and Martha Reeves among them, and on the girl groups of Motown. For her second album she took those sounds, added the downbeat electronica she'd discovered travelling in Europe, and built something that sounds like 1966 and 2008 at the same time.
The guest list behind the desk is remarkable. The Neptunes produced "I Decided," a Supremes-style stomper that topped Billboard's dance singles sales chart, Mark Ronson handled "6 O'Clock Blues," co-written with Motown legend Lamont Dozier, and Jack Splash shaped "T.O.N.Y." and "Ode To Marvin." Thievery Corporation open the record with "God Given Name," Bilal joins her on "Cosmic Journey," and "This Bird" floats over a Boards of Canada production.
It sold 46,000 copies in its first week and won a warm critical welcome, Pitchfork and Entertainment Weekly among the fans. The title nods to Hadley Street in Houston, home of her father's Music World complex, which makes it surely the most stylish business address in Texas.
