About the album

Takk means thanks in Icelandic, a gracious title for a record whose songs went on to soundtrack nature documentaries and film trailers the world over. After the hushed, untitled mysteries of ( ), Sigur Rós came back brighter, warmer and more open, with Jónsi's bowed guitar and falsetto riding swells of strings, brass and glockenspiel. They recorded it at Sundlaugin, their own studio in a converted swimming pool outside Reykjavík, with Amiina on strings.

"Glósóli" builds from a heartbeat into a roaring wall of guitars, "Hoppípolla" is pure soaring joy with its tumbling piano and horns, and "Sæglópur" moves from music-box delicacy to thunder. Deeper in, "Gong," "Andvari" and "Heysátan" give the album its long, glowing fade, and "Mílanó" gets the 10-inch side to itself.

It went gold in Iceland and became the gateway record for a generation of listeners who don't speak a word of Icelandic and don't need to. Play it loud on a grey Sunday morning; the neighbours will think the weather has improved.
